solidarity run

I have no more words for Boston. No words.

But I do have pictures and a love that I hope somehow made it to them.

When I walked into John’s Run/Walk Shop before the run, it felt like the receiving line at my wedding. I gave so many hugs. I was struck by the resilience and the support of this community. I made my way through the crowd and shrieked and hugged. Because I am so thankful for all of you.

I wiped away a tear as we sung the Star Spangled Banner.

And then we ran. We smiled and “wooo”ed and waved. And we ran.

We will continue to run, my friends.

We run to support Boston

We are runners. And when we don’t know what else to do, we run.

We are joining with the larger Lexington running and walking community on Saturday morning. I hope you can be there. To run, to walk, to connect. Any pace, any distance. Just come out if you can.

We will meet at John’s Run/Walk Shop and the run will start at 7am. I don’t know what the crowd will be like, so I will be early.

Visit the LRL Facebook page for information on finding distance and pace buddies. There is also a link there to join the event. I ask that if you plan on coming, you join so the organizers know how many to plan for.

I cannot put into words what this community means to me. I look forward to seeing the turnout. And to giving you a hug.

Runner Profile – Mandy

It is Runner Profile time! Meet Mandy!

Father's Day-NASCAR-Summer 2011 148  Triathlon 1 016

Why did you start running?

I started running to lose weight and get in better shape.  My husband had been a runner for awhile and I was secretly jealous of what his body was able to do.  I’ve been running barely over a year now.  I started couch to 5k and literally had a hard time doing the 3 minute run when I began.  I celebrated my 1 year runniversary on December 20th!  I stay motivated by my many things.  I love to get to know my friends better by running together.  I want to get better …. run longer …. run faster.  It’s also very important to me to stay healthy and make sure I’m setting a good example for my girls.
Are you training for a race or an event?

uhhhh, yes.  I have a hard time when I don’t have a goal set.  I like the structure of a plan!

What event?

Currently I’m training for 2 half marathons this spring – Run the Bluegrass and Derby City Mini.  I’m also excited that I can say that I’m training for my first FULL marathon this fall!!!!  I’m already registered for the Air Force Marathon in September.

Training is going great so far! I use the Runner’s World training plans.  I have an app on my phone and it has it all planned out by the day and week.  I used it to train for my first half and felt very prepared.

What is your favorite race?

I can’t decide.  My favorite running only race I have competed in would be my first half marathon.  My first was the Big Hit 1/2 in Louisville.  I have always been a big baseball fan and getting to finish at home plate in Louisville Slugger stadium was a highlight.  I was able to finish my first triathlon last year also.  The sense of pride I felt when I crossed that finish line is hard to come by!

Where is your favorite place to run?

Harrodsburg Road Trail, for sure.  I can remember (after biking there) telling my husband that I have no idea how anyone can run up and down those hills.  I ran most of my long runs training for my first half there so I hit a lot of my distance milestones there.  I guess that’s why its special to me.  I feel like there are plenty of good hills to prepare you for anything but they aren’t bad enough to break you.

What are your running fears?

Getting hurt …. and not finishing in the time goal I had set.  I know …. seems silly.

Do you measure your runs or do you just run for fun?

I measure everything.  I never thought I would be able to run more than a mile so the feeling of seeing the numbers still motivates me.

Have you ever dealt with injury?

Not really anything to keep me down more than a week or so.  What kind?  I think I had a small bout with Plantar Facitis when I first starting increasing mileage a lot.

Do you do any cross-training?

I spin at least once a week and Zumba at least once a week :)   I also try to get some swimming in some.  I have more fun doing Zumba but the calorie burn of spinning is hard to beat!!

Do you have a long-term running goal?

Just to keep going - I really don’t think I will want to put in the time it would take to train for anything longer than a full 26.2!

What gear is absolutely necessary for you?

I love my new Garmin 410!

What gear is on your wish list?

Nothing specific.  I always love new running gear that makes me look totally awesome :)

Do you eat on the run? If so, what?

Not until I get over about 10 miles.  During my first 2 halfs that I’ve ran I used the gummies at about mile 8 and 11.

What is your favorite running song?

I don’t really know, I guess.  My playlist would probably be too embarassing to list …. I love the 80s rock and 90s pop!!

Are you listening to any podcasts or audiobooks while you run?

I’d like to try podcasts but haven’t yet.  My favorite audiobook I’ve listened to is “Heaven is for Real”  Several times while running and sweating like crazy I got goosebumps from this book.  It is that good!!

What are your favorite running/health-related websites or apps?

Again, I use the runner’s World training plan app.  My favorite app is MyFitnessPal.  It has helped me lose 40lbs since last December.  I use it everyday.

What is the strangest thing that happened on a run?

It’s not fun to have to use the restroom when running the Harrodsburg Rd trail.  SOMEHOW I made it all the way back to the Y in wilmore to the gas station :)

Do you have a running pet-peeve?

I often find myself stuck on the tiny track at the gym (16 laps for 1 mile!!)  I have to keep myself from politely moving people out of the way when they walk in the middle of the track on their phones……
What are you reading right now?

My Bible.  One of my goals in 2012 was to read it completely.  I am sad to say I didn’t reach that goal but hopefully I’ll be finished with it this spring.

What is your one guilty pleasure?

Chocolate Chip cookies!!  I’ve been known to use half of my daily calories on these things!!!

What is your favorite meal/restaurant/recipe?

I love breakfast, specifically biscuits and gravy :)

Okay, friends. I wanted to let you know a few things we have going on in 2013. I wanted you to make the necessary plans!

January 5th we will run part of the RunTheBluegrass course. It is going to be a HUGE group, so just be ready!

January 19, we will travel to Cincinnati to run part of the Flying Pig course. We’ll start and finish close to an a-mazing waffle place, and we’ll run The Climb in the middle. I’m not sure exactly what the mileage will be, but I will let you know as soon as I get it routed it. I just wanted you to be able to put it on your calendar!

And now…RACES!

Jan 1 – Hangover Classic. 10 miles. Louisville. New Year’s Day. I have wanted to do this race for several years but haven’t. Maybe this will be my year!

So, where will I see you?

Resolution Run – LRL Discount!

Where were you on January 1 last year?

I remember exactly how I spent my early afternoon. I started my year volunteering for the Resolution Run.

It was such an outpouring of love and support. I was swamped at the pre-registration table. The on-site registration line was long, but no one complained. It ended up being a very cold, very windy race. Being at the final turn and cheering my friends in is one of my favorite running memories.

This year, the Resolution Run 5 Miler is on Tuesday, January 1st at Coldstream. There will also be an untimed 1.5 mile fun run/walk. Runners will be entered in a raffle for over $1000 in prizes. Packet pickup is at West 6 Brewing on 12/31 from 3-7pm or we can pickup on raceday at the Embassy Suites at Coldstream starting at noon. The race will benefit Tri 4 Freedom and the first 350 registrants will receive a long-sleeved soft cotton fair trade T-shirt.

This year, the race organizers have set up a discount code just for us!  The discount code is “LEXRUNLADIES” and can be used between now through 12/15/12 at midnight. The code will get you $3.00 off online registration. Details (including the registration link) can be found at www.3wayracing.com .

Sounds like a great way to start off the year, doesn’t it?

Planners!

I was going to make this for myself and once I got started, I thought you may want one too!

I created a planner/running log that is full of pictures of all of us. I tried to structure it so it could be used as either a planner or a running journal. The monthly pages look like this:

And the weekly spreads are in this layout:

The price for this planner is $25. I have used blurb.com for gifts the past three Christmases (for cookbooks and planners), and I cannot say enough about their quality. They are absolutely beautiful, well constructed, you will be pleased. And you’ll probably see your face in here somewhere!

In order to beat the holiday deadlines and have them here by Christmas, orders will only be accepted through Saturday, December 1. Order will be placed on Sunday, and there will be no additional copies ordered.

Fill out the form below to order! Please feel free to email me at LexRunLadies@gmail.com if you have any questions! (Please add $1 for processing to pay through PayPal. Email address for payment is Krissie.Bentley@gmail.com)

Coach Krissie at your service!

I want you all to know I’ve really wrestled with this.

(Wow, that sounded a lot more dramatic than it did in my head.)

I am a certified RRCA Running Coach. And I’m trying to make this my career.

I wanted to let you know how this will change the way I operate LexRunLadies.

Big picture? It changes one thing: I will not be posting training plans on the website. I will post links to help you find your own, but I will not be developing and distributing plans here.

That’s it. Group runs will stay the same. Twitter and Facebook will stay the same. I will be as involved as I always have been. That’t it.

Here’s where it gets exciting, though.

I am now qualified to truly train you. And I am very excited to introduce you to my latest project, Committed Coaching.

I will be leading training groups for the spring. We will be training for the Race to Read 5K, Rock ‘n’Roll Lexington Half Marathon, and the Flying Pig Marathon. Here’s what I’m offering:

  • a training schedule that details each workout
  • email access to me
  • access to a private group for trainees
  • weekly training newsletter
  • reduced rate for group tshirt
  • organized training runs for local runners (these group runs are open to everyone)

You can click here to see information for training groups. I am also offering one-on-one coaching with various levels of coaching. There are specials (through November 19) on the registration page.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

thoughts for November

I’m still working on my IHHM recap post, and I hope you are doing the same! The professional pictures are AMAZING and I can’t wait to share them with you!

But there are some things I want to bring to your attention.

I am going to need some help in November.

I’ll be out of town on vacation for 2 weeks in November, and away a third for Thanksgiving. Because of this (and that lots of us will be in recovery for our long races), a lot of November events won’t be group runs but instead group meetups at runs. We’ll start to pick things back up in December and then we’ll start new training cycles for 5K, half-marathon, and full marathon the first week of next year! Keep your eyes open!

Here’s what I’m thinking for us the next few months. The races with *s are races I won’t be running. Can someone volunteer to get a group picture together at each of these?

10/21/12 PTA 5K

10/26/12 Black Cat Chase 5K *

10/26/12 Run Like Hell 5K

11/03/12 Run for Another 10K * (I might be there – playing it by ear.)

11/11/12 Marshall Marathon and Half *

11/11/12 OBX Marathon

11/15/12 Southern Lights Stroll 5K *

11/16/12 Glow-in-the-Dark 5K *

11/17/12 Turkey Strut 5K *

11/22/12 Thoroughbred Classic 5K *

11/24/12 Hunger Run 5K *

11/24/12 Mountain Masters Trail Race *

Oh, and we need to start thinking about group costume ideas for the Reindeer Ramble (12/08/12). Thoughts?
